Summary:

Here is a graphic organizer to help you put your summary together (it is Microsoft Word document). Remember that a topic sentence names what article you read AND the main idea.

These questions can help guide you...

  • Who was involved in the event?
  • Where did it take place?
  • When did it take place?
  • Why is this important?
  • What is the main idea that the author wants you to know after reading this article?
  • What are at least 3 supporting details from the article connecting to the main idea?

Purpose: Reporting on Current Events is a great way to read in a different format, have exposure to a variety of information, and learn about the world around us. There are things happening around the world everyday, and learning about current events is a great opportunity to learn about them. Plus it allows them to practice finding main ideas, and summarizing information.

Guidelines: Each week I will select 2-3 articles that you can use for current events. But you are not limited to those articles. You can pick any article in the Local, US, World, or Technology sections of the newspaper. Your article must be appropriate for school, so articles focused on violence or deaths won't be accepted. While they are current events, there are better choices for this assignments. Examples such as natural disasters (earthquakes, tornadoes, etc) can be used, but the focus should be on the event and the impact on people (NOT the number of people who died).

Assignment:

-Select 1 article each week from the Local, US, World, or Technology sections (other sections will work, but please see me prior to using that article).

-Read the article, highlight important information, find main idea and supporting details (use graphic organizer if needed)

-Write (typed or handwritten) a brief summary of the article

-Turn in on Thursday
