US Government

Page history last edited by Peter Hanson 12 years, 11 months ago

Which branch... below are a few different issues that need to be settled by the government. Decide which branch would handle each issue. (Respond in your journal, and explain why).

1) Which branch would be responsible for creating a new law to help give more people healthcare?

2) Which branch would sign a peace treaty during World War II?

3) Which branch would decide if the NFL lockout was legal or illegal?

4) Which branch would approve the new Secretary of the Treasury?

5) Our former Governor in Washington (Gary Locke) was appointed to be the Ambassador to China. Which branch appointed him, and which approved him?

6) Former President Bill Clinton was impeached during his second term as President. Which branch was responsible for impeaching him?

7) You have a speeding ticket. Which branch would you go to in order to contest your speeding ticket?

8) If you wanted to discuss a new law making school lunch healthy, which branch would you go to?

9) What branch might make many public speeches about healthcare or education?

10) Which branch advocated for the new health care law, which put it into law, and which is deciding if it is constitutional?

After the delegates made a compromise to how the U.S.A would be governed, they set the plan into action. The plan went something like this. The delegates made up two houses: the Senate, and the House of Representatives. The House of Representatives was a house where every state would choose two people to represent in the house of senators. The house of representaties is a house where there is one person elected for every 30,000 people. A senator can serve up to two six year terms, and a representative can serve the same. Congress has permission to pass laws, but only if the people,(representatives) and the  senate agree on the law. But the delegates were worried that congress might get out of control and one of it's leaders might become a king. So they invented a president. The president wouldn't be able to make laws, but he would be able to stop congress if congress got out of control. The U.S government now had a president, and congress. But they needed something more. They needed another branch of government so the president couldn't become a king. Their solution, a Supreme court. A court higher than all the rest. No one could argue with it's decisions. The Supreme court could stop congress and the president if they got out of control. And all of this was added in the United States Constitution.
